Tim Mikan
Based in Riverside, California, Tim Mikan is a nationally recognized designer, choreographer, educator, and creative director whose work has influenced the marching arts activity for nearly three decades. Known for blending sophisticated visual storytelling with emotionally resonant performance design, Tim has collaborated with award-winning marching bands, winter guards, drum corps, and performing ensembles throughout the United States and internationally.
Originally from St. Augustine, Florida, Tim received formal jazz saxophone training at Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Florida State University. During his collegiate years, he discovered the winter guard activity as a charter member of Ancient City Ensemble before later performing with Fantasia Winter Guard. Those formative experiences helped shape a creative philosophy rooted in musicality, movement, emotional authenticity, and performer-centered storytelling.
Since 2000, Tim has served as a designer, choreographer, consultant, and educator for a wide range of scholastic, collegiate, independent, and professional ensembles. His extensive design portfolio includes nationally competitive marching bands, winter guards, dance teams, and drum corps across the country, including collaborations with Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps, Gold Drum and Bugle Corps, Vessel Drum and Bugle Corps, and Italy’s Millennium Drum and Bugle Corps.
Tim currently serves as Director of Color Guards at Riverside City College, where he oversees both the RCC Marching Tigers Color Guard and Fantasia Winter Guard. Since joining RCC in 2005, he has helped shape the program into one of the most respected and consistently competitive organizations in the activity. Under his creative leadership, Fantasia has continued its legacy as a perennial national finalist while developing performers and educators who have gone on to influence the marching arts throughout the country.
In addition to his work at RCC, Tim dedicates his days to Palm Desert Charter Middle School, where he actively supports a storied and innovative color guard program. PDCMS is committed to nurturing young performers through the cultivation of creativity, collaboration, and exceptional performance. His work there reflects a deep commitment not only to competitive achievement, but also to mentorship, character development, and creating meaningful artistic experiences for students at every level.
Beyond ensemble design, Tim has contributed significantly to the broader marching arts community through leadership, education, and advocacy. He served on the Board of Directors for Winter Guard International from 2016–2021 and is a co-founder and current Director of Membership for West Coast Winter Guard beginning in 2016. He has also been a featured clinician and educator for organizations including WGI Spinfest On Tour, the Texas Color Guard Circuit, and numerous educational camps and training programs nationwide.
Tim continues to provide innovative drill design, choreography, staging, soundtrack development, and creative consultation for performing ensembles seeking thoughtful, impactful, and emotionally driven productions. His work is recognized for its cinematic pacing, musical sensitivity, and commitment to creating performances that resonate deeply with both performers and audiences alike.
Whether working with world-class performers or first-year students, Tim brings a collaborative, forward-thinking approach that prioritizes artistry, education, and authentic human connection through performance.
